Richmond Craft Mafia’s Spring Bada Bing – at Hardywood Park Craft Brewery
April 29th 10am-5pm
Meet Icka from Square of the Bone! This is another NEW vendor to Richmond Craft Mafia shows!
How did you get started making your products?
I majored in Sculpture at VCU where I started welding, foundry, blacksmithing…. anything metal related. I decided to get another degree at VCU in Craft and Materials studies where I focused in Metals/jewelry. After school I worked “on the line” in jewelry production for a major manufacture, but broke free and have been running wild with my own designs of just over a year now.
Tell us about your process.
I use imagery of objects and studies as wearable art. I illustrate by hand piercing and fabricating metal, glass firing enamels and lost wax casting. I use only ethically sourced materials. My metals are purchased through foundries using recycled silver and copper where I also send my own scrap to be refined and reused. Most stones used are found by hand and not mass minded. My leather and fur components are second hand scrap and re-purposed pieces.
Of all of your products what is your favorite and why?
I love my Underpants necklace. The reaction when people see it at my booth is always amazing. If only I could cash in on the smiles and conversation this piece creates!!
What is your most popular product? Why do you think it’s so popular?
My copper lungs necklace is my most popular piece. Its amazingly unique while being immediately identifiable and intriguing.
What is the biggest hurdle you have overcome with your business?
Organization! It kills me when you see on social media and Etsy these perfectly displayed studio and work spaces. Even the pictures I’ve shared have been staged, but my bench is a living MESS. I work hard and furious and will create a magnificent shinny new object, but leave a total wreck behind!
What makes your product different than other similar projects?
I make a great deal of genuine one of a kind pieces and a huge part of my business is custom orders.
If you weren’t a maker what would you be doing?
I love the idea of begin a scientist / biologist. I’m fascinated by natural sciences and they are a huge inspiration to my work.
What do you watch or listen to while you are working?
My child and books on tape: China Mieville, Garth Nix, Steven Hawking when i’m doing a lot of hammering I’ll listen to Beach Jag music
Do you have any pets?
Yes – would you like them? Two cats who think it’s funny to wake my one year old up in the middle of the night.
